I get a lot of offers to review products or promote some website or another and I say no more often than I say yes. But you want to send me some free Triscuits -- a cracker I enjoy? Well sure, I'd love some Triscuits. Actually the email message I received went a little like this:
"We’d like to send you two boxes of Triscuits—both our Original and Reduced Fat Triscuits—which come with seed cards that you can plant at home to start your very own herb garden. The Original Triscuits come with basil seeds and the Reduced Fat Triscuits come with dill seeds. We’ll even include a $20 gift card so you can buy potting soil and containers to get your basil and dill plants started!"
Triscuits, herb seeds, and a gift card? Yes, please. I think my email response went out within minutes of receiving the offer and a few days later I had:
Did you notice the reference on the box to the Home Farming Movement? I remember Paul James writing on his website about the project ages ago and being intrigued then. So I hopped on over to the Home Farming Movement site and found some interesting stuff like expert advice from Paul James! Back to our boxes...I had my surgery almost immediately after they arrived, so it took me a long time to actually open the boxes and plant the seeds. I finally started the project on July 2nd by reading the handy planting instructions on the back of the boxes:
I dutifully soaked the cardboard pieces in water for 2 hours:
The basil card didn't separate all that well, but it had a pretty even distribution of seeds on each piece and I knew the seeds would grow through the thin cardboard remnants just fine:
The dill was much easier to split:
But didn't have a very equitable division of seeds:
I decided to plant all the dill in the same container, but the basil in two. I had a bunch of clay pots hanging around so I used the $20 gift card to buy some potting soil. Not the entire $20 worth of soil was used for this project, but it was used in my garden, so I'm thinking it's okay:
Five days later and I have the first basil seedling poking up today:
And lots of dill seedlings:
I have to say this was super easy and a complete novice gardener could easily get these to grow. I could see this being a really fun project to do with kids too. Many thanks to Triscuit and the Home Farming Movement for a fun idea and a super gift. I know I'll be keeping an eye out in the supermarket for more Triscuit boxes with bonus seeds. And some of the Triscuits will be hitting the road to Buffalo with us early in the morning!
Oh, I want some Triscuits! Forget the seeds - but what a clever marketing ploy!
That's got to be your most interesting offer to date....
