It rained this morning, but then the rest of the day has mostly been gray, cloudy, and cold. The sun broke through the clouds for about an hour off and on and I started to feel guilty. My garden needed me. At least I could walk outside and see how my seedlings were faring. They were fine. Then I thought I should snap a photo or two of all the work VPH did yesterday. The Mother's Day garden looked really good, just a little weeding and mulch and it will be all set. Well I have asked VPH to replace the overly large stones at the top right with ones that match the others in size:
The hosta/rhododendron bed had more marsh marigolds, but with a little weeding and mulching it will look great:
The perennial shade garden was growing quite nicely:
But the weeds were really bothering me:
I bent over to grab a few and before I knew it 40 minutes zoomed by and I had a nice pile of weeds on the walk:
Much better, just a bag or two of mulch and it will be good to go:
Now I know this may look kind of bare to some of you who love layers and not a bit of ground showing, but we're kind of plant minimalists and we love our collection of plants and large rocks:
Another shot from the steps, this time of the blue pots of shade perennials and hopefully soon a hill of wildflowers:
These are the baskets that VPH didn't see until he was on top of them and caused his injury. They are just about buried in the sea of marsh marigolds:
Can you see remnants of a wind-chime on the tree on the right? I think I'll take that hook out and replace it with a planter hanger, throw one on the other tree and hang those 2 baskets there this year:
So it wasn't quite a lazy Sunday, but with less than an hour spent working in the garden, I can hardly call it a productive Sunday!
Love those marsh marigolds. I think you accomplished a lot on a Sunday...and your "sparse" shade garden, well, it will fill in quickly enough. I like that you've left lots of room for them to spread and I do LOVE rocks in the garden! Well done.

Nancy -- It's easy to love the marsh marigolds when they're not in your garden! In a few weeks they'll be an eyesore on that hill all dried out and crunchy. I'm glad you like the perennial shade garden. I do too!
Patricia -- Here's a link to Wikipedia on marsh marigolds, or more properly caltha palustris: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caltha_palustris. I don't know how they got here since we're not exactly in a boggy area, but they're here to stay because it would be impossible to eradicate all the rhizomes.
