I have to admit I didn't get a whole lot done today. I got a pedicure at 9:30am and I had to wait a while to make sure my toes dried completely -- I've ruined more than one fresh polish job in the garden. While I relaxed on the couch, Lee got the mower going and cut the lawn, or rather cut the marsh marigolds and now hopefully the grass will grow. Then around 2pm we headed over to Home Depot. We needed mulch:
10 bags of it to be precise. I also wanted to pick up some garden soil, but the silly low price garden soil was gone. We stopped by Expect Discounts on the way home because they often have really well priced plants out front this time of year. We weren't disappointed, but with two people in the car and a trunk full of mulch, there wasn't much space for the plants:
The patio tomato plant was $7.99. The purple sage, lavender hidcote, and variegated ginger mint (new to me) were $5 each. And the 4 jalepano peppers and 2 sweet basils were only $.99 each. But do I need to count this towards my self-imposed $100 limit for 2011? I'm thinking the $15 for the sage, lavender, and mint shouldn't count because they're perennials:
I needed that mulch out of my car, but where to put it? Ah, piled in the location of the new project is the perfect spot. Have you guessed what we're doing here yet? None of this mulch will stay here:
Okay, I'll take pity on you. Home Depot had an insanely good price on a cedar raised garden kit:
I mean an insane price...$35/each! So I picked up two and we're going to assemble them in the top middle configuration in the spot where the bags of mulch are smothering grass and weeds:
But I wasn't quite ready to deal with assembling them, so while Lee went inside to shower, I quickly weeded the perennial shade garden:
And then wandered around taking photos. I love seeing all the ferns emerge:
The cinnamon fern looks so alien:
And of course I do so enjoy the chive blossoms:
But the cheeriest sight of all is the strawberries flowering already:
I am walking in the March for Babies walk tomorrow morning and then having brunch with my friends, so I won't be able to get into the garden until the late afternoon. The walk is another reason I took it a little easy today. But there are far worse reasons not to be able to garden!
Yes, Heather, $15.00 worth of plants does count toward your $100.00 plant cap - but, if your perennials last for three years hence, I will allow your amortization of their cost....
Good Luck on your baby walk1
