And I am so excited about what the garden is producing! So far we've harvested 3 good size zucchini and look what I found tonight -- a cucumber! I'm going to give it a day or two before harvesting it:
The volunteer sunflower is blooming:
It's a much smaller flower than Lee and I expected, but pretty just the same. It's stupid hot here, but not the worst weather we've had so far this summer. I still have gardening to do (I didn't get to planting any of the poor little plants waiting patiently for a home) that I must get done this week. I might just have to drag my lazy ass out of bed early one day this week and just get it done.
Gardening in the heat, full sun is not my cup of tea. I like watering the containers and that's about it. The sunflower looks great by itself like that. No zukes or cukes here. The cukes are just not gonna happen and my mom said zukes need a female flower and all I have are male flowers. Who knew???

Wendy -- Too true! But when I wait for the sun to go away, the mosquitoes attack. I did know that about zucchini, but not until I started growing them. You'll get some females, just keep watering.

Way too much heat here in Southwest Florida! Only two of my beans are flourishing, and only 'one mystery' seed sprout has made it.
I do have one volunteer hot-weather tomato seedling left. I think it will be the lone garden survivor.

I think we are the only spot on the continent (wet West Coast) to be dealing with low temperatures and rain. June and July have be quite disappointing in terms of gardening (and sunbathing and camping and outdoor festivals and...) but I am thinking the variability is what we will have to get used to as will our plants.
I really enjoy watching your garden's progress, Heather. Still a treat to read. :)

Mom -- We're actually hotter up here right now than you are down there!
Jan -- I've heard from my father about how cold his summer (in WA state) has been. I guess no one is happy with their weather this year! Thanks for the lovely compliments, I'm behind in reading your blog and need to catch up.

I'm picking cucumbers, zucchini, string beans. If you want to increase your yield of squash and cukes, hand pollinate. It's easy. Just do it in the am since each flower lasts for just a day.
